Games Design as a Designer

The games design project was a 6 week module in which we were put into teams with other memebrs of my faculty and course in order to work together and create a game to appeal to children, aged 11 to 15, to encourage action towards climate change. I was the designer meaning I got to utilize my design skills to create a video game. Video games have always been a major part of my life and it was great to work in a team and create one using our own designs. I used my skills in Photoshop to create a logo for the project in which I combined the idea of pollution, nature and post-apocalypse together, by creating a radioactive symbol and designing a small tree growing out of it, symbolising certain objectives inside the game.

Briefing and Research

I kept the colour scheme basic to go with the low poly theme, that me and my other designer in the team, had decided to go with. I made use of pinterest and other inspirational websites to research existing games similar to the one requested in the briefing.

I also used Belbin's team role theory to assess what everyones individual team role in the group would be, for me I got team leader, due to my confidence, organisational skills and good public speaking assets. Being team leader it was my responsibility to make sure all team members were happy with what they were doing, as well as making sure everyone was included and that work was spaced out and given to the right skill sets. poster

I used my skills in both Photoshop and Illustrator to create the basic wireframe of the “radioactive barrell monster” inside the game. Once I had completed the task, I passed the wireframe to the other designer in my team who used their skills in Adobe Illustrator to bring the enemy to life.

I made use of Pinterest to research;Post-apocalyptic searches on the internet. Influence's from other games such as fallout, ashen and Tranzit from black ops 2, We are taking inspiration from ashen and journey in particular because of the simplistic low poly style which creates a clean fluid look., The use of Pinterest has enabled us to find ideas and influences for the game and characters.
